Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is the new scheme launched by PM Mr. Narendra Modi in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. This cooking gas scheme aims to provide 5 crore free cooking (LPG) connections to below poverty line families till 2019. This will not only reduce the cost of each family, but will also help to improve the health of rural Indian women.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose Ballia to launch the PM Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) as LPG’s connections in UP is lowest in the Ballia district. He said, “This scheme launched today will benefit poor families and particularly poor women. The subsidy would be provided in the accounts of the women so that there is no corruption.”
You must be aware about the PM’s ‘Give It Up’ initiative which encouraged many people to give up their LPG subsidy. Nearly 1.13 crore cooking gas users voluntarily gave up their subsidies through Give up subsidy. Around Rs. 5,000 crore of money was saved through this campaign which will be used to fund this ambitious Rs 8,000 crore PM ujjwala yojana scheme.
Recalling his mother’s agony and sacrifices, Prime Minister Modi said that, “I was born in a very small house, there were no windows. When my mother used to cook food on firewood, sometimes there would be such thick smoke that we were not even able to see our mother when she used to serve the food. This is why I can completely understand the pain of mothers and their children. I have gone through that.”
