10 New Upcoming Bengali Movies 2018-19

From being severely limited to regionalism and regional languages, Indians have come a very long way within the last decade. In a country where Bollywood is preached as a religion, a South Indian movie like Baahubali is one of the top grosser till date. In the past few years, there is a certain sense of appreciation among the movie-goers for the content of the movie and not its language.

Many of the regional movies are now dubbed in multiple languages and are highly appreciated throughout the country. Something similar is true for Tollywood or Bengali movie industry as well. 1. Uronchondi

Abhishek Saha is debuting as a director with the much-awaited Uronchondi releasing on 3rd August. The movie chronicles the journey of 3 women who are from different generations and age groups. Written by Sudeep Das who has also written Shobdo Kolpo Droom, the movie features Chitra Sen, Sudipta Chakraborty and Rajnandini Paul as the female leads.

2. Naqaab

Shakib Khan plays the role of a thief in Naqaab who starts seeing dead people after an accident. Taking advantage of this ability, he starts conning people by performing exorcisms. Things soon turn sour as he turns into a prime suspect of a double-murder case. Also featuring Rudranil Ghosh, Nusrat Jahan, and Sayantika Banerjee, this Rajiv Kumar directorial is releasing on 24th August and is expected to be one of the top Bengali movies of 2018.

3. Jonaki

Director Vikram Aditya Sengupta got inspiration for Jonaki from the story of his grandmother. Veteran actress Lolita Chatterjee plays the role of 80-year lead in the movie which is also actor Jim Sarbh’s first Bengali movie. It also features Sumanto Chattopadhyay and Ratnabali Bhattacharjee in pivotal roles. The movie has already been selected for the International Film Festival in Rotterdam and is expected to release in August/September 2018.

4. Brishti Tomake Dilam

Jaya Ahsan is currently one of the top actresses of Tollywood these days. Her next, Brishti Tomake Dilam, a psychological thriller, is releasing on 7th September. Jaya plays the title role of Brishti, a woman who suffers from multiple personality disorder with many different shades to it. Directed by Arnab Pal, the movie also stars Chiranjeet Chakraborty, Rajesh Sharma, and Rajatabha Dutta.

5. Finally Bhalobasha

Director Anjan Dutt and actress Raima Sen are teaming yet again after their 2016 movie Bong Connection in Finally Bhalobasha. The movie would have three love stories which will run simultaneously but meet in the end. Apart from Raima, the movie also has Anirban Bhattacharya, Arindam Sil, Sauraseni Maitra, and Arjun Chakraborty in key roles. The movie is expected to release in September this year.

6. Byomkesh Gotro

Abir Chatterjee plays the role of India’s most popular detective Byomkesh Bakshi in Arindam Sil’s Byomkesh Gotro. Releasing on 12th October, the movie also features Sohini Sarkar, Anjan Dutt, and Arjun Chakraborty. The movie revolves around the murder mystery of Satyakam, son of a business magnate in Mussoorie. Will Byomkesh be able to unveil the truth? Catch this thriller in theatres to find out!

7. Hoichoi Unlimited

If you love comedy Bengali movies, Hoichoi Unlimited is one movie that you shouldn’t miss. Directed by Aniket Chattopadhyay, the movie features Dev, Koushani Mukherjee, Puja Banerjee, Kharaj Mukherjee, and Roja Paromita Dey. The comedy movie revolves around four men and five women and the problems in their lives. The movie would be fighting Byomkesh Gotro on 12th October at the box office.

8. Rosogolla

The life of Nobin Chandra Das, the popular inventor of Rosogolla, has inspired this movie directed by Pavel. It is a Biography/Drama which revolves around Nobin, his wife Khirodmoni, and his wish to make a unique sweet for her. All the trial and errors that he came across during the process and his ultimate victory, in the end, is sure to leave a sweet taste in the minds of the audience. The movie is expected to release in December and features Kharaj Mukherjee, Ujaan Ganguly, Subhasree Ganguly, Kaushik Sen and Aparajita Adhyay in important roles.

9. Tritio Adhyay

Paoli Dam and Abir Chatterjee are reuniting for the 3rd time after a hiatus of 5 years in Tritio Adhyay which is expected to release in December 2018. Directed by Manoj Michigan, the movie redefines love through passion, sacrifices, and retribution. Koushik meets Shreya, his ex-girlfriend in Jharkhand and thus begins a thrilling journey which is sure to keep you enthralled throughout its duration.

10. Mahalaya

Directed by Soumik Sen, Mahalaya is one of the most anticipated Bengali movies which is expected to release in January/February 2019. The movie is about the popular ‘Mahisasuramardini’ program controversy which was aired during Durga Puja on Radio. The movie features Jisshu Sengupta in the lead role and if reports are to be believed, Soumik Sen is planning to send this movie to film festivals throughout the world as he believes the content of the movie is far ahead of the current times.
